Geoffrey Chaucer

Geoffrey Chaucer was an English poet and author, often referred to as the Father of English literature. He is best known for "The Canterbury Tales". Chaucer was instrumental in legitimizing the literary use of Middle English when the dominant literary languages in England were still French and Latin. He also made significant contributions as a philosopher and astronomer, with a career in civil service serving as a bureaucrat, courtier and diplomat.
