Sophocles

Sophocles was an ancient Greek tragedian born around 497/6 BCE in Colonus, near Athens, and died in 406 BCE. He is one of three ancient Greek tragedians whose plays have survived. Known for his deep humanism and exploration of existential themes, Sophocles wrote over 120 plays, with only seven surviving in complete form, including 'Oedipus Rex' and 'Antigone'. His work significantly influenced the development of drama, notably through his portrayal of complex characters and moral dilemmas.
