Washington Irving

Washington Irving was an American writer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle." Irving was among the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe and greatly influenced other American authors, including Edgar Allan Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Born and raised in New York City, his work paved the way for the development of American literature.
