The girl with the ruby lips we like,
    The lass with teeth of pearl,
The maid with the eyes like diamonds,
    The cheek-like-coral girl;
The girl with the alabaster brow,
    The lass from the Emerald Isle.
All these we like, but not the jade
    With the sardonyx smile.

The Woman With Jewels

The woman with jewels sits in the cafe,
Spraying light like a fountain.
Diamonds glitter on her bulbous fingers
And on her arms, great as thighs,
Diamonds gush from her ear-lobes over the goitrous throat.
She is obesely beautiful.
Her eyes are full of bleared lights,
Like little pools of tar, spilled by a sailor in mad haste for shore...
And her mouth is scarlet and full - only a little crumpled -    like a flower that has been pressed apart...

Why does she come alone to this obscure basement -
She who should have a litter and hand-maidens to support her on either side?

She ascends the stairway, and the waiters turn to look at her, spilling the soup.
The black satin dress is a little lifted, showing the dropsical legs in their silken fleshings...

The loveliest face! I turned to her
Shut in 'mid savage rocks and trees; -
'Twas in the May-time of the year,
And our two hearts were filled with ease -
And pointed where a wild-rose grew,

"We should know all, if we but knew
Whence came this flower, and whence - this face."

"Strange sister of this little rose,
So softly 'scaped from underground;
O tell me if your beauty knows,

Among the haughtiest of her sex, in noble, quiet pride,
Cornelia stood, with mien that seemed their folly vain to chide:
No jewels sparkled on her brow, so high, so purely fair,
No gems were mingled 'mid her waves of dark and glossy hair;
And yet was she, amidst them all, despite their dazzling mien,

A woman is like to, but stay,
